The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team put up a fight with NJCAA Division I Indian Hills (Iowa) but saw its six-match winning streak snapped Wednesday night with a 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21 loss in the Chargers’ home opener at John M. Lewis Gymnasium

Sandburg (6-2) trailed 23-22 in a tightly contested first set before the Warriors (4-2) got kills from Mariana Rodrigues on two of the next three points to take the early lead.

The Chargers raced to a 13-5 advantage in the second but saw IHCC pull even at 21. Sandburg won the next three points, though, behind a kill from Cora Vyhnanek (West Prairie), a Jordan Price (Fulton) block and a kill from Price to help even things at a set apiece.

The Chargers were within 20-18 in the third before the Warriors closed with five of the next six points. Vyhnanek set up Peyton Bowman (West Prairie) for a kill that pulled the Chargers within 19-18 in the fourth, but four straight kills from Iva Vranic helped the Warriors close out the match.

Sophomore Josalyn Owens (Lincoln) paced the Chargers with 14 kills and added 12 digs. Sophomore Hannah Thompson added seven kills and a team-leading 20 digs for Sandburg. Vyhnanek dished out 30 assists and served a pair of aces, while Price had four blocks and two aces for the Chargers.

“We played pretty well against some tough competition, so it’s hard to be too upset, but we left some chances out there to take it to a fifth set,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said. “Still, playing as well as we did against a team like this should pay off for us later in the season.”

Sandburg is in action at the Jimmy John’s Invite hosted by Southeastern (Iowa) on Friday and Saturday.
